In March, 2017, 52 subsea industry professionals gathered at CORE Innovation Hub to participate in a conversation led by allied health professionals, Amy Douglas-Martens and Martin Mains. The discussion unpacked some of the barriers to inclusion and ways to support women working in the subsea sector.

During the first Get Wiser lunch time seminar, Dr. Jenny Brockis discussed how the brain works and how to achieve better time management performance. Based on a practical neuroscience approach Dr. Brockis explained how to overcome the challenges we face in juggling life and work commitments.
Dr Linley Lord, Curtin University presents to the Perth subsea industry on why establishing a benchmark of women working in subsea engineering is critical for instigating change and increasing the number of women working in the industry.
The WISE initiative to undertake a study to establish base line data for women’s participation in the subsea oil & gas industry in WA was officially announced at an industry gathering attended by 65 interested professionals.
The results of the research study: "Women in Subsea Engineering – Establishing the Baseline" were presented by Professor Linley Lord and Dr. Melissa Marinelli. Key findings from this research includes lack of data, difficulty for women establishing credibility, difficulty accessing formal and informal networks and mentorship opportunities, challenges utilising flexible working arrangements, negative perceptions around women as mothers and a lack of understanding of the value of diversity within organisations.
International Women’s Day provided us with a global opportunity to come together and acknowledge the achievements and aspirations of the women amongst us. This celebration was the perfect day to launch the Wavemakers project, an initiative developed by the WISE taskforce to highlight the achievements of twelve outstanding women in the subsea industry. Their stories are through a mobile exhibition shown around various locations in Perth.

Sheryll Fisher discussed what an introvert actually is (never mind the bad press), and how introverts can be very powerful and effective leaders; not by trying to be something they're not - but by capitalising on their quiet strength. Understanding introversion is the first step, using it to lead effectively in a world full of extroverts, is a skill that can be learned.
